STUDENT LIFE << 27 men, promotes aquatic sports and water-safety activities at the University. Every man who toes out for swimming or gymnastics in his freshman or sophomore year is eligible to become a probationary member. A year's probation and semester's pledgeship precede initiation. Students not in swimming or gymnastics competition may qualify for membership by participation in specified activities. The Dolphin Show at Homecoming is a colorful tradition of the Club which began in 1916. University Sailing Club - The University Sailing Club offers instruction and opportunities for sailing at Coralville Reservoir to men and women students who seek membership. The Club is an affiliate of the Midwest Collegiate Sailing Association. University Ski Club - Winter sports enthusiasts find good fellowship, instruction, and skiing opportunities in this club, which offers membership to men and women. Iowa Rugby Club - Iowa men interested in playing this vigorous sport are encouraged to join this club, which engages in some inter-school meets. Recreational Facilities Iowa's recreational facilities offer a varied year-round program of sports and fun. Golf - Special rates are maintained for student golfers at Finkbine Field, the University's twenty-seven-hole golf course layout on the west campus. Ice Skating - When winter comes, your skates may flash on the ice at City park. Bicycling - You may rent single and tandem bicycles at a local bicycle shop. Billiards - Seven pocket-billiard tables, three straight-rail tables, and two snooker tables are available to help you develop your skill with the cue in the recreational area of the Iowa Memorial Union. Bowling - To increase your ability to get strikes and spares, the University offers the sixteen-lane bowling alley in the Iowa Memorial Union. Tennis - The University's tennis courts are located by Old Armory, just down the hill from Old Capitol, near the Field House on the west campus. There is no fee for use of the courts. Skiing - You may check out skis and poles at the Women's Gym. There are many hills around Iowa City for winter sports. City Park is a popular setting for picnics and swimming. There is a swimming pool, fireplaces, and running water, a pavilion for picnics and parties, and other facilities for your use in this park, which is located along the west side of the Iowa River. Lake Macbride, located fifteen miles north of Iowa City, offers facilities for swimming, boating, and picnicking, and the Coralville Reservoir also provides facilities for boating and picnicking. College and Department Groups In every college and department, there are student organizations and activities open to students on various bases.
