All-University Events and Traditions Induction Ceremony - Students and faculty gather on the east approach to Old Capitol for a short but impressive ceremony on the first day of classes each fall. Deans, department heads, and members of the administration appear with the President, who welcomes the students and reads the Oath of Realty to the assembled group. The band plays the Alma Mater, "Old Gold," and the flag is raised over Old Capitol to mark the official beginning of the new school year. Commencement - Although Commencement marks only the end of another school year to many students, for seniors it means the end of their undergraduate days at Iowa. The Field House is decorated in black and gold for this important event, and parents and friends come to witness the presentation of diplomas which mean so much to the graduates. Homecoming- Homecoming Weekend starts with the parade, pep rally, and the presentation of Miss University of Iowa on Friday night. Prizes are awarded to the housing units which enter the best floats. The town is crowded with alumni and other football fans. After the game, the Homecoming Monument is burned. The Dolphins present their annual swimming show, and the hOmecoming Dance is the climax of the big weekend. Homecoming is an example of fun, festivity, and football at its best. Dad's Day - Each fall, one of the football weekends is dedicated to the dads of Iowa students. The Alumni Dad of the Year is chosen, fathers of the football players are introduced at the game, and a dinner and mass meeting are held in honor of the dads. Omicron Delta Kappa is the sponsoring student group. Mother's Day Weekend - Each year, the first weekend in May is devoted to Iowa mothers. AWS is in charge of the Mother's Day activities, which include a luncheon at which the Iowa MOther of the Year is presented. Governor's Day - Iowa's Governor comes to The University of Iowa every spring to review the military units which are trained under the ROTC program. The governor is honored at a luncheon, and military awards are presented. Supreme Court Day - Annually in the spring, senior students in the College of Law prepare and try cases before representatives of the Iowa Supreme Court. A special dinner honors the justices and is the time for announcing special awards in the College of Law. Mecca Week - St. Patrick's Day brings Mecca Week, when the engineering students all wear beards and straw hats to class. The Mecca Ball and coronation of the Mecca queen climax a week of activities. "Mecca" stands for the five phrases of engineering at Iowa: mechanical, electrical, chemical, civil, and aeronautical. Rileeh - This coined word stands for the inter-college program uniting Rust College, Le Moyne College, and The University Of Iowa in the broadening of educational horizons at the two southern schools. It is supported in part by student and faculty contributions. << 31
