UNIVERSITY OF IOWA ORGANIZED FEBRUARY 25. 1847 SPORTS ( PICTURE OF MAN) BILL MASKILL In Sport's Limelight the men in North 4th Floor at Hillcrest, (Mott House), seem to never get a chance to see Bill Maskill when he is at home, but they do see a lot of him at the Fieldhouse and on the Practice Field-- and why not? For as it happens, the men make up the 1971-72 version of the Iowa freshman team and Bill is on e of the assistant coaches " I only get time to eat and sleep at home," Bill says, "every other minute of the day is spent with my concentration n the offensive backs!!" Bill is a graduate of Western Kentucky, a school which has shown its mettle in basketball (taking the 3rd place NCAA trophy, and 3rd in small college rankings in football). It was at Western Kentucky that Bill played quarterback on the varsity football team and lettered in his junior year while completing his study in Physical Education. A native of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Bill has spent his first year at Iowa working under head freshman football coach Harold Roberts. Recently, Bill's assignments have been to cover area high school games and look for new recruits for the following year. there is one area of his job that is not all so pleasant, and that is the fact that freshman ball players must work as the opposition to the variety in practice sessions. "The freshman are at the mercy of the varsity,' he says, "there is little time, if any, where the entire team can get together and work out plays and timing. " the freshman have for the past two weeks been the " taxi squad" - where the foe for the week is their alter-ego. " The first-string varsity is always pitted against us," Bill continues, " and it gets pretty demoralizing at times." Despite the fact that the freshman are in the bottom of the picture now, Bill feels that the boys have a lot of potential and will prove it on October 22-- when they open against the freshman from Minnesota. The rest of the year will include readying for two remaining games with frosh teams from the university of Illinois and Northern Illinois University. Bill believes that the 49 men on the team are some of the most enthusiastic and mature athletes he has seen-- and the hopes he has for building Iowa's future hopefuls are not without substance. "The football program is definitely on the upswing-- and you can really see the difference on the practice field." "It is easy to begin a season against some lowly team and talk of the victory, but it is another to play a nationally- ranked tema and see where all your mistakes are, and where your good points lie." Despite the fact that Bill Maskill is rarely at home does not take away from the enthusiasm he holds for the "dorm athletes" he coaches. If Bill is ever challenged that North 4th Floor is becoming too much of a zoo, all he has to do is sit back and rely on 49 guys to back him that he at least keeps law and order on the gridiron. Of the large number of teams that will take part in the intramural Program, 35 will be of the female variety. The directors of the Intramural Program Warren Slebos and Harry Ostrander, want to make it quite clear that they are not leaving anyone out of this year's picture. Included in the co-ed program are: basketball, flag football, volleyball, swimming relays, badminton (doubles), paddleball (doubles), softball, and outdoor track. This year marks the addition of two new sports in the "guys and gals" area: archery and canoe racing. Slabs also announced the addition of two new sports in the men's program: spacebar (to begin Monday, January 31), and cross-country track ( dates to be announced). Throughout the course of the semester, LIGHT-EATER will publish the scores and schedules of all sports while giving the students in the residence halls sufficient coverage and notice of the coming events. Residence hall occupants should take advantage of the facilities provided them by the new Recreation Building-- situated just across from the stadium. The building houses such activities as jogging, table tennis, football, frisbee and softball throwing and a spacebar with a trampoline. On the balcony there are pocket billiards bumper pool tables and a vending area. Just under the balcony are the recreational locker facilities-- complete with two sauna baths for the women and a large twelve-person sauna for the guys. In the spring, fall and summer picnic equipment can be checked out at the Recreation Building, and in the winter, one may also check out toboggans. The hours the Recreation Building is operating are: Monday-Friday: 9:00 a.m.- 10:00p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday from 1-10p.m. Students can not work out on the Main Deck Area between the hours 3:30-6:30 p.m., as that time is reserved for the Athletic Department's scheduling of practice for the varsity sports. This year the Intramural Program will be publishing a rating of the TOP TEN teams in each of the sponsored sports--flag football, basketball, and softball. Top 10 The first week rating of Intramural Flag Football Teams is dominated by social and professional fraternity teams. The top spot is held down by the independent team, the Phil Pomeroy Show. Defending champ Phi Delta Phi is ranked second. Reno is the only league which has no representation in the top 10. Top 10 1. Phil Pomeroy Show 2. Phi Delta Phi 3. Tau Kappa Epsilon 4.
