The Iowa Greek EXPRESS Vol. 3 Iowa City Mar. Jewish Houses Shun Tradition Brotherhood is not am ajor concern for Alpha Epsilon Pi. They just enjoy living together in the manner they have chosen. Change is rapidly invading the Greek system at Iowa. Phi Epsilon Pi and Alpha Epsilon Pi, the two Jewish fraternities on campus, have coped with and adjusted to the changing of times and attitudes in two different ways. Whether their new systems will work has yet to be determined, but the members of both houses seem to be fairly happy with the new arrangements. Liberalism overtook tradition in the Phi Ep house. The use of drugs was the main question and along with drugs came many other changes in traditional values. Old Phi Epsilon Pi was really no longer considered sacred. Men left the fraternity for many reasons and consequently financial problems arose. The national merger of Phi Epsilon Pi with Zeta Beta Tau was another blow to the old Phi Eps, but the men who enjoyed a sort of "group living" situation hung on. They decided to lease a house, take in nearly anyone who needed a place to live, and dispense with the national rules of order and ceremony. The Phi Eps now live at 1005 1/2 Muscatine and hold occasional meetings with the main topic of discussion being the disposal of garbage. Meals are not served but each man has his own cupboard in carpeted and fully equipped kitchen. The Phi Eps have adjusted well and they have few complaints. The men of Alpha Epsilon Pi have perhaps gained from the transition that Phi Epsilon Pi made. Their financial situation stable with fifty-four members. Most of the members are freshmen and sophomores and no objections are raised when a member leaves to live in an apartment. They participate in formal rush, but rely on their spring rush weekends to recruit members. The AEP's also run their house in the traditional manner, but few hold any real concern for the longevity of Alpha Epsilon Pi. These men are mainly involved with making their fraternity an enjoyable place to live, jsut as long as they choose to live there. The AEP's also have a little sisters' group which is quite active. But this group is not entirely composed of sorority girls. The latest pledge class has two girls who are waittresses at the Pizza Palace. Neither of these two fraternities is determined to hold on to tradition or sentiment. Brotherhood is not a major concern, they just enjoy living with each other in the manner that they have chosen. Alpha Epsilon Pi has a more structured pattern that Phi Epsilon Pi and is more financially stable, but these factors aren't too important to the men involved. Each of the men in both fraternities see their houses as a place and a way to spend a few of their college years.
