What Is Involved in Working for 609: Leafleting, canvassing, and discussing the amendment. A petition with the heading "I Support 609" will be available from the following committee. Iowa City Citizens Committee Don Gibson, Coordinator for 609 Phone 338-3378 Box 812 Iowa City, Iowa 52240 2. Organize with other students, or work on your own to explain what protests are all about. Most of the questions you will get will concern what the papers call "violence on campus." You can give real service for peace if you can show people that the students don't need to be controlled by the cops. They only desire that people listen to them. 3. You can set up meetings with churches, business groups, to talk about the war. Work with high school students. If you wnat speakers to come to your town in Iowa, here is who you should contact: For Western Iowa, you will be referred to other speakers, bureaus, and agencies. Iowa City Speakers Bureau Ann Hogben, Coordinator Phone 337-5625 Box 812 Iowa City, Iowa 52240 4. You can organize students in your town as a base of support for peace. Together, you can leaflet your neighborhoods, talk with people about the war, and get actions together that fit the special circumstances of your town. If you nedd to know where you can get literature about the war, write to: American Friends Service Committee 4211 Grand Avenue Des Moines, Iowa 50312 Before You Leave Town: If you want some experience and training in methods and problems in talking to people person to person, there will be a canvassing action in Iowa City until the first weeks in June. People are being trained to begin canvassing Iowa City on Wednesday of this week. If you are interested, go to the dorms before Wednesday and find who is doing this already. After Wednesday, go to Saing Paul's Church on the corner of Jefferson and Gilbert streets. You will be supplied with information, leaflets, and a brief training session.
