Sample Action Letters for Congress favoring Amendmant 609 Dear Senator Hughes: Thank you for your telegram of May 8 to the University of Iowa's Daily Iowan and also for the joint wire signed by you and 4 other senators. I am solidly back of your support for Amenent 609 and hope you and other senators and congressmen find the means of winning its aoption. Sincerely, Dear Senator (or congressman) Apparently the reliable news from Cambodia is that the Cambodian army is offering no effective support whatever to its invading "friends", the U. S. and Vietnamese armies. Once again the U. S. is in the position of deciding what is best for another country. When are we going to stop this? I believe the time is now and that Amendment 609 to the Military Procurement Authorization is the most effective means of reversing our continued involvement in Southeast Asia's wars. Sincerely, Dear Senator (or congressman) I have not seen a single report coming from on the spot in Vietnam that has spoken of a broad base of support for the Thieu government. When is the United States going to stop serving this military regime which has locked up its important or vocal Vietnamese opposition? The United States is in the position--which should be intolerable to a democracy--of joining hands with an unrepresentative government. By our support of Thieu, we are forcing on the Vietnamese people the will of a regime whose existance depends on force and on continuing the war. We must get out of Vietnam now. I urge you to vote for Amendment 609. Sincerely, You may want to write your own Congressmen adn SEnators if you are from out of state. Addresses for Iowa senators and the congressman from this district are: Senator Harold Hughes The Senate Building Washington D. C. Senator Jack Miller same address Congressman Fred Schwengel House of Representatives Building Washington D. C. Senators already favoring Amendment 609 who would doubtless be glad to hear from you are the other signers of the telegram to the Iowan: George McGovern, Mark O. Hatfield, Charles Goodell, and Alan Cranston -- all at the Senate Building.
