WE DEMAN AN END TO RACISM AND TO SEXISM Thursday night, 8 Black students and 1 White student were shot at while peacefully walking down the street. Four of the Blacks were arrested at gunpoint and harassed in a racist way in this incident. This shows a racist double standard - white students who were participating in the demonstration on the Pentacrest were repeatedly warned and quietly arrested, while Black students who were involved in the demonstrations were shot at with shotguns. This incident was only symptomatic, and not an isolated incident. Racism exists on this campus in many forms, The athletic department recruits Blacks as athletes to exploit them for Box Office receipts. The administration attempts to exclude Black student from the University, and tries to channel those that are admitted. The University refuses to teach the true struggles of Black people in this country, and lies about their struggles for freedom. The University does not relate to the social or economic needs of Black students. It prevents, rather than helps, Black students from gaining an understanding of themselves, nor does the University contribute to the development of the Black students white (racist) middle class values and standards, which can in no way help change or remove the ghettos. Black students have repeatedly attempted to change these conditions by demanding: 1. more Black students on campus 2. a Black studies Department that teaches the truth. They have not with no success. In the entire U.S., Blacks are consistently harassed by the police, given the worst jobs, and the lowest pay. (The average Black worker earns $3,000 less then the average white worker per year.) Blacks are charged the highest prices, and the highest rents for the worst housing. These practices are justified by the racist ideas, like when ROTC-trained officers justify the war in Indochina by calling the Vietnamese "gooks, slopes," eat. WE THINK IT IS NECESSARY FOR ALL STUDENTS TO FIGHT RACISM. We need a united movement against the war, racism, and the deteriorating conditions that most people in this country face. This cannot be achieved unless whites defend Blacks against the racial oppression they suffer, and the attacks made on them, like the shootings on Thursday. Sexism is economic exploitation and discrimination under the law in the job market, in moral standards, and in expected social roles. It damages all women in many ways; a women who graduates from the University of Iowa has already been conditioned into thinking she must depend on a husband for food and shelter. Her job (if she gets one at all) will pay approximately $3,000 less than the same job filled by a man. "Women's jobs"--nursing, clorical, teaching, social work, motherhood are the ultimate stereotype: emotional, irrational, without mind, will power, or physical self-reliance. This University perpetuates the training of women to have an inferior self-concept and inferior skills. 51% of the population is in bondage. SMASH SEXISM!
