Return to ENGEL AMERICAN FRIENDS SERVICE COMMITTEE INCORPORATED NATIONAL OFFICE HENRY BEERITS, Chairman HENRY J. CADBURY, Honorary Chairman BRONSON P. CLARK, Executive Secretary NORTH CENTRAL REGIONAL OFFICE GARY N. HAWORTH, Chairman CECIL E. HINSHAW, Executive Secretary Eastern Iowa Area Office 311 NORTH LINN, IOWA CITY, IOWA 52240 Area Code 319 338-7250 10 August 70 MR ROBT. ENGER Office of the President University of Iowa Iowa City, Iowa 52240 Dear Bob - I am presently on vacation without a typewrite; please excuse the longhand. I also apologize for the long delay in answering your first note. But I wanted to confer with others instrumental in the monitors last Spring before replying to the President's request. We decided not to release the names of those (especially students) who acted as monitors. Many of us are concerned about the (seemingly) coming witchhunts in America and we feel we should not serve that persecution on any way, especially by releasing names of those who acted in good faith. We do not entertain any suggestion the President is party to the persecution. On the contrary. we are aware, as he is, checking a book out for the pursuit of knowledge and inviting a speaker in order to explore new or even hostile ideas is no longer considered a neutral act by some too powerful to care for America.
