MEASURE DOCUMENTARY SUPPLEMENTS - NO. 3 AUGUST 1970 published by UNIVERSITY CENTERS FOR RATIONAL ALTERNATIVES Editor: EDWARD CHALFANT 110 W. 40 St., New York, N.Y., 10018 Additional Copies Available on Request Telephone : (212) 524-2018 UCRA'S TESTIMONY BEFORE THE SCRANTON COMMISSION In Washington, D.C., on 23 July 1970, the Presidential Commission Inquiring into th Causes of Campus Unrest gave more than 75 minutes to hearing testimony by, and to asking questions of, Professor Sidney Hook, President of UCRA. Introducing Prof. Hook, William Scranton, the Chairman of the Commission, remarked in casual tones that everyone in the country had heard of UCRA. After Dr. Hook had read his prepared, 20 minute statement, Mr. Scranton further noted that the strategy for preventing and limiting campus violence outline in the UCRA statement , was the first practical proposal that had been placed before the Commission up to that moment. In view of its importance, publication of Dr. Hook's initial statement is being undertaken jointly by MEASURE and The Humanist. The pages that follow here contain the complete edited text of Prof. Hook's statement, reprinted by means of electronic stencils from the galley proofs of The Humanist's September - October issue. We are advised that the same issue of The Humanist will contain a first, oblique attack on UCRA by Professor Noam Chomsky of M.I.T. MEASURE will make every effort to keep UCRA members informed of published criticisms of UCRA, whether by friend or foe, and will discuss the implications of such criticisms in whatever way seems best. Arrangements are in progress fr the sending of a complimentary copy of The Humanist to every member of UCRA. Some of our members have received materials from a incipient faculty group called University Professors for Academic Order, Inc. It was founded by Dr. Michael Szaz and several other teachers in the Washington D.C., area. Its initial letter of solicitation echoed in many respects the goals of UCRA and the language of its publications. The natural, consequent reaction within UCRA was to raise the question, Would it not be simpler for all interested faculty members to utilize the existing and already quite active UCRA framework? But a subsequent UPAO communication has put the attempted, new organization much more in Juxtaposition with AAUP, whose recent operations appear to be regarded by many members of the Szaz group with dissatisfaction. Professor John H. Bunzel, a member of the UCRA Board of Directors, has been appointed President of San Jose State College in California. In keeping with UCRA policy concerning service by academic administrators on our Board, he has graciously sent in his resignation. It is hoped, however, that h can continue to give valuable support to our efforts, in ways that will not disturb our faculty centered equilibrium. Detailed, documented information is needed by MEASURE concerning the use of tax exempt college and university facilities and resources for political purposes, whether in May or continuously in recent months. Information is needed also concerning grading "options" destructive of academic standards and/or faculty rights.
