[[Handwriting]] BHG(?) Nov 3 '51 [[Header in bold italics]] Self-Survey [[Article text]] The Hawk-Eye Gazette: In an editorial on Oct. 31 the following statement is made: "When this survey (Burlington Self Survey) program was first undertaken, all of us were assured it would be pursued from a purely objective viewpoint....that nobody would be pointed out as scapegoats....that there would be no naming of names. Now it appears the plan is the contrary to create sentiment that will apply pressure, if possible....A negro speaker Monday night complained he had been denied hotel privileges here and named a hotel from which, he said, he had been barred." The work of the Burlington Self Survey had been completed at the time of the meeting. All findings had been referred back to the committees of those areas surveyed for approval.. The completed survey and its findings was approved by representatives of most of the areas surveyed. in no place does the printed report of the survey mention any names or single out any institutions. The conclusions are anything but inflammatory or provocative. The remarks of the speaker mentioned were not a part of the findings of the survey. This was an experience that the speaker had himself on that very day. The speaker is a member of the council of Chicago, a lawyer and a minister of one of the largest churches in Chicago. We did not presume to ask him for a text of his talk, nor regard ourselves responsible for his revealing information relative to an experience in Burlington. R. G. BECK Chairman, Burlington Self survey.
