No. 23 Burlington, Iowa, Thursday, November 8,1951 Price FIVE CENTS Per Copy [[Bolded Subheading]] EDITORIAL... WORTHY PROJECT [[Article text]] An examination of conscience-- whether general or on a specific behavior--is something that unquestionably profits every individual. The community of Burlington recently embarked on a large scale examination of conscience as to its behavior in the field of discrimination against minorities, the action being conducted under the title of Burlington Community Self-Survey. The results, as reported at a dinner held at Congregational church on October 29, proved the project undoubtedly worthwhile and of potential profit to the community. The extent to which the community can profit by ti depends, of course, upon the whole heartedness with which the examination and its results are accepted. Be it said for the large force of citizens who conducted the actual research, that a difficult and exacting assignment was handled with diplomacy, dignity, and fairness that has been unquestioned. The problem of racial discrimination, of course, loomed as the most important in the report. The completed research indicated that one racial group is being compressed into a highly restricted and unremunerative field of employment as well as being in a tightly squeezed field of social existence. Such a condition, enforced by whatever means it may be, unquestionably maintains a situation of explosive character, and the more the community learns about it, the more likely the compression, the repression, and the explosive situation can be relieved before it leads to a minor or major disaster. The sooner, too, will our community be able to call itself Christian and stay outside the realm of pure hypocrisy.
