In spite of the tremendously encouraging advances listed in this report there remain some areas where discrimination is still practiced. The Mayor's Commission on Civic Unity has chosen discrimination in eating places to bring to the attention of the public for two principle reasons. First, because the experience of having service refused one in a public place is deeply embarrassing--especially to young people. Several such instances have been recently reported. Secondly, as the attorney general has pointed out within the last few months, these acts are strictly against Iowa law.
It should be stressed that a great many Burlington eating places already serve all customers regardless of race or creed in a truly democratic spirit. By checking the form below (do not write your name on it) you can help reassure the remaining restaurant operators that public opinion and patronage will support them when they serve all alike. Note that there is an opportunity to agree or disagree with the statement below. Please check one square and hand in or mail this form so that a really accurate expression of public opinion will be known.

Here is a report of solid achievement by the people of our city. It is issued for the observance of Brotherhood Week, because these achievements are the tangible results of brotherhood put to practice over the last five years. It was approximately that long ago that a few Burlington citizens discussed conducting a Survey of Human Relations and arrived at this conclusion: the self-realization of individuals belonging to any minority group is important to everyone. "The greater the earning capacity of every person, the greater is the prosperity of the community. Our city's self-respect is in direct proportion to the dignity and self-respect of the individual citizen," said their report. Burlingtonians have earned such respect over this five year period and in so doing have strengthened Christian precepts and American democracy. To the extent that we practice brotherhood in the coming year these precepts and our democracy will become stronger and our city will grow in dignity.
Brotherhood Week in Burlington is sponsored by the Interfaith Council of Churches, Burlington Chapter National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Ministerial Association, Knights of Columbus, Mayor's Commission on Human Relations (which prepared this report), Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, Temple Israel, Council of Churches.
