[[handwriting]] Gazette 1/20/50 [[end handwriting]] Survey Group Meets Tonight The local community survey group will meet at 7:30 this evening at First Evangelical & Reformed church. Committees have prepared questionnaires for the 5 fields to be surveyed -- employment, housing, education, health and public accommodations--and will submit them to the entire group for approval. The meeting is open to the public. *** Months ago the president's committee on civil rights came out with a report that showed that American is still far short of the great goals set up in the constitution. The committee called upon the people to do something to wipe out segregation and discrimination, and to assure civil rights for all Americans. Democratic and socially-minded individuals and communities have taken up the challenge and dealt with it in various ways. One of the most striking of these methods is the community self-survey, in which the community looks at itself, studying its needs and evaluating its practices, policies and services. About 50 local persons met here last September to lay the ground work for a possible survey in Burlington. Several prominent local organizations are interested in sponsoring such a survey, including the League of Women Voters, the PTA, the Council of Church Women, the CIO, the AFL and the Des Moines County Ministerial association.
