Smorgasbord By Lloyd Maffitt Burlington's community self-survey group is holding another meeting tonight, and more power to them. If every community would take an honest look at itself via the self-survey method, and conscientiously strive to eradicate whatever blemishes the survey may reveal, Communist propagandists would be dealt a body blow. It is ironical that some of Communism's bitterest enemies are, by trampling upon the rights of fellow-citizens whose nationality or religion they don't approve of, giving aid and comfort to the very force they hate. Every time a Negro is is denied equal opportunity for employment, for example, Uncle Joe's agitators rub their hands and grin, and within a few hours another flood of vituperation is aimed at those who hypocritically betray the democratic principles they uncontiously mouth in public. Depriving minorities of their Constitutional rights is not only hypocritical, it is stupid. As Tallyrand is supposed to have said when Napoleon executed one of his political enemies, "It's worse than a crime - it's a blunder." _______ Elmer Korilla called to twit us about our use of the phrase "experienced expert" in a recent column. "How could a man be an expert without being experienced?" He asked. Well, how about those dudes who spend a fortnight in London and Paris cocktail bars - with maybe a weekend at Monte Carlo thrown in for good measure - and then come home to lecture as "International relations experts?" ______ Tom Dailey comes up with the excellent suggestion that the log cabin off West avenue - Burlington's last link with the past - be restored and preserved. This could be done either by some public-spirited citizen buying it for a memorial, or by the city obtaining it and letting the Boy Scouts, the Garden club, union carpenters et al do the renovating. When we see what Nauvoo has done with its historical relics, it seems downright shameful the way Burlington has neglected its landmarks. ______ A few years ago a ballet based on the music of Jacques Offenbach was played in New York under the title of "Gaitie Parisienne." In reviewing it, Time's critic wrote that the music "sparkled like the rhinestone in the garter of a Paris coquette." As the proud owner of the "Gaitie Parisienne" album, played by Fiedler and the Boston Pops, we're happy to report his judgment is excellent. ______
