[[handwriting]] May 19 52 [[end handwriting]] Will Survey Des Moines Job Practices The Des Moines Fair Employment Practices commission will open an office on the third floor of the Municipal court building June 1, the commissions' newly appointed secretary - consultant said on Sunday. "Our first job is to get information," said Dr. Riley Pittman whose services were obtained by the commission through Drake university. [[photo caption]]DR. PITTMAN[[end caption]] The commission was named by the city council in January, 1951, to prevent, through conciliation and persuasion, any discrimination and employment practices. The city council last month approved a commission proposal to employ Dr. Pittman, associate professor and acting head of the department of religion in Drake's liberal arts college. Actual Situation. "We want to make a survey of the actual situation as it exists today in Des Moines," Dr. Pittman said. "We will contact labor unions, employers and hiring agencies to determine what employment practices and policies are followed in Des Moines." Dr. Pittman will work full-time for the commission during the months of June, July and August. Regular office hours will be observed at the commission's headquarters. The Rev. Ben C. Bobbitt, pastor of the Central Christian church, is chairman of the seven-member commission. The council named the commission with the expressed hope that with the right kind of co-operation it would not be necessary to enact man said. "We will contract labor a fair employment practices ordinance. Youth Work. Dr. Pittman, 40, has been on the Drake faculty for six years. He represented Iowa last year on the Young Men Christian association student area council and has been active for several years in student "Y" programs at Drake. During the summer of 1950 he directed a students-in-industry program in Los Angeles, Cal., in which problems in human relations were treated. Also, while in Los Angeles Dr. Pittman served as vice-president of the board of the Avaion Community center, an inter-racial organization. Other commission members are Rabbi Eugene Mannheimer; James Morris, editor of the Iowa Bystander, Negro weekly newspaper; James McDonnall, organization director of the Des Moines Industrial Union Council, C. I. O.; Mrs. Edith Webber of radio station KWDM; Marvin Schmidt, vice-president of John Deere Des Moines works, and C. L. Sampson, vice-president and general manager of the Northwestern Bell Telephone Co.
