October 4, 1968 STUDENT ACTIVITIES BULLETIN Page 2 IMU OFFERS ADDITIONAL SERVICES, NEW PERSONNEL As you returned to campus this year, you probably noticed some changes in your Iowa Memorial Union. While you were away, administration and staff have been busy building new units, adding new services, and moving old offices. The most striking addition to the Union this summer was the new Barber Shop and Beauty Salon. These facilities occupy space previously used by the ping-pong rooms. The Barber Shop and Beauty Salon, operated by Mr. Ron Huff, offer their services at competitive prices with downtown establishments. Your hair cuts and coiffures can be billed to your University bill, however, and at no service charge. For further information, you can call the Barber Shop at 351-2649 or Jan Shafer at the Beauty Salon at 351-2640. Mr. Huff, by the way, leases his space from the Union and is self-employed. His previous shop was destroyed in the Strand fire last year. Another change which has taken place is the face-lifting given to the Information Desk. The entire area is now enclosed in one office. Additions to the stock of available items are paperbacks, souvenirs, and school supplies. To make room for the expansion, the Director's office was moved down the hall to the Pentacrest Room. Mr. Kottner's office was not the only one to move, however. The Food Service and Scheduling offices were rearranged with the Food Service remaining in its old location and the Scheduling Office going down tot he old Highlander office across from the Pentacrest Room. The Highlander office, in this game of musical chairs, was thus moved down next to the TV room where Student Activities Office formerly resided. Aside from physical changes, we have new personnel filling old slots and opening new ones. Fred Whyte has replaced Al McIver as Director of the Highlanders. Mr. McIver moved to Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. Fred is a graduate of the University of Washington. His hometown, however, is Vancouver, British Columbia. Fred is attending Graduate School in the Department of Sociology. Many of us will miss Aletha Scholer's smiling face. She and her husband moved away and she is being replaced by Marvin Kelley. Mr. Kelley comes to us from the United States Army where he was a personnel office with the Corps of Army Engineers. He received his B.A. degree in Music, and his M.A. in College Union Administration from New York University. Mr. Kelley's experience includes the managership of the Queens College Memorial Union in New York. He is married and has no children. Two other additions to our staff are Linda Brown and Ray Kril. Linda is the new Program Adviser. She received her M.A. from California State College. Her experience includes coordination of Student Affairs at California State College. She is married and has two children. Ray is the new Concert Manager and Films Adviser. He comes to us from North Dakota State University where he was coordinator of Student Activities. Ray has his M.S. in Student Personnel from North Dakota State University. He received his B.A. in Art from Montclair State College in New Jersey. He is married and has no children. So you can see, it's been a busy summer for the Union. We hope you enjoy the new facilities provided by the IMU and further, we hope your associations with our staff, new or old, are all pleasant ones.
