October 4, 1968 STUDENT ACTIVITIES BULLETIN Page 6 HIGHLANDERS OFF TO A GOOD START THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA SCOTTISH HIGHLANDERS held their annual fall Tryouts Sunday, September 22nd, in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union. Several hundred came to the auditions and some 80 new, tentative members were accepted in their respective interests of becoming pipers, drummers, and dancers. "Tentatively" selected means that it is up to the individual girls to work hard, attend rehearsals regularly, and show cooperation and sincere interest in becoming an active member of the band. The Scottish art of piping, dancing, and drumming is taught to the members, and it is the desire of the Highlander Teaching Personnel to assist in every possible way to make the performing year of the Highlanders one of the very best. Because of our limited number of instruments and uniforms, it is impossible for us to have any larger membership than 175. However, it is hoped that another tryout can be held during the academic year, 1968-69, perhaps in late November, for those who were unable to attend the regular fall auditions. We are looking forward to an unusually successful 'performing' year. FRESHMAN INTERN PROGRAM Freshman Intern is an organization sponsored by Student Senate. This year it is headed by Nicki DeMarco. The purpose of the Intern program is to acquaint new students at the University with opportunities and activities available. This is done by having heads of various interests serve as guest speakers for the group, or Interns themselves reporting on organizations in which they are interested. Interns also have an opportunity to work closely with the Senate and individual Senators. Freshman Intern is open to any freshman who qualifies. Decisions on membership are made by the Intern advisers, who look for students with a great deal of campus leadership potential. The decision is based on an interview and information from an application form which provides a list of high school activities and class standing.
