File: Student Affairs Student Activities Bulletin University of Iowa Office of Student Affairs Vol. III, No. 2 October 29, 1968 DEAN HUIT INVITES STUDENTS TO "DROP IN" ON TUESDAYS! Continuing a program that he began last year, M.L. Huit, Dean of Students, will be available on Tuesday afternoons (from 2:3- to 5:30) in various student-centered locations so that all University students can better have an opportunity to drop by and chat with him. Informal settings have been selected as a special desire to accommodate those students who might feel hesitant to approach the formal atmosphere of a dean's office. Either private or group involvement is welcome; students need not even identify themselves. Top of conversation? Well, this is up to the student(s). Anything and everything is relevant according to what the student has on his mind. In order to encourage an atmosphere of openness and freedom of expression the Dean has emphasized that conversations will be held in complete confidence. The Dean feels that his experience last year was profitable for him and, hopefully, for the students who talked with him. In his effort to make it as easy as possible for students to talk to a dean, he hopes to communicate the understanding that an administrator's worth need only be measured in terms of the quantity and quality of his service to students. The tentative schedule of locations for meetings includes: October and November, Union Activities Center; December, Men's Residence Halls; January, Activities Center; February, Women's Residence Halls; etc. We hope readers of the BULLETIN will publicize information concerning this important program. Specific sites for appearances in the residence halls and other areas will be announced in subsequent Bulletins. UNIVERSITY RETREAT The Office of Student Affairs has announced that a University retreat will be held at the Christian Conference Center in Newton, Iowa, on November 22-23. The purpose of the retreat is to enable students, faculty and administrators to get away from campus and, in an informal setting, become better acquainted and thereby open fruitful lines of communication between and among representatives of different areas of the University community. Approximately 70 people are expected to attend this retreat. A committee has been appointed by the Dean of Students, M. L. Huit, to implement the retreat. The committee includes: James Dickinson, James Marvel, James Robertson, Mary Royer, Jill Wiley, Paul Dowdy, secretary and administrative coordinator, and Roger Augustine, chairman.
