Student Activities Bulletin University of Iowa Office of Student Affairs PLEASE POST Vol. IV, No. 1 September 10, 1969 REVISIONS APPROVED FOR CODE OF STUDENT LIFE This summer President Bowen announced approval of revisions in the Code of Student Life effective for the 1969-70 academic year. These changes were based on the work done last year by the Committee on Student Life and were finalized after consultation with the Committee in July. A Student Bill of Rights was also adopted upon the recommendation of the Committee. Both the Student Bill of Rights and the new Code of Student Life will be distributed to all students as a supplement in The Daily Iowan soon after school begins. Major changes in the Code of special interest to student organizations are explained in the three articles which follow. NEW CODE BRINGS CHANGES IN SOCIAL REGULATIONS The 1969-70 Code of Student Life has substantial changes from the previous Code in the area of social regulations. It will no longer be necessary for organizations to register any social functions with the Office of Student Affairs, as has been required in the past. When a recognized student organization sponsors a social function, it will be the responsibility of that organization to provide adequate supervision and to ensure compliance with civil law and with the Code of Student Life. Sponsorship is determined by an organization's planning, promoting, and financing of the function rather than by the number of members attending the event. As in the past, alcoholic beverages may not be served on campus or in approved housing. If alcoholic beverages are served at social functions held in places other than these, it is the responsibility of the sponsoring organization to provide adequate supervision and to ensure compliance with all applicable civil laws pertaining to the consumption of alcoholic beverages. The regulations pertaining to visitations and open houses have also been subsequently changed. The basic definition of the two remains the same; an open house is a social function during which rooms in an approved housing unit are open to the public; a visitation is a social function during which the residents of an approved housing unit may invite guests,
