September 26, 1969 STUDENT ACTIVITIES BULLETIN Page 3 IOWA MEMORIAL UNION PAPERBACK BOOKSTORE The newest service for students at the Iowa Memorial Union is a Paperback Bookstore, which will operate seven days a week and will provide text books, reference books, and recommended reading in addition to an unlimited supply of regular paperbacks. The store will be under the guidance of Mrs. R. Miller and Mrs. V. Isbell and will utilize student cashiers to fill out the number of operating hours. Over 5,000 titles will be available under the classifications of fiction, non-fiction, autobiography, art, drama, language, and a host of others. This store is located in the area previously occupied by the browsing library. Portable racks have been installed to adequately display the great number of titles available. Students may use their ID to charge purchases in this area, and as an introductory offer, a 5% discount is being given on all purchases over $1.00. If you want a book and we don't have it just let us know and we will order it for you. EVENT SERVICES--FORMERLY THE SCHEDULING OFFICE, IOWA MEMORIAL UNION In the east wing of the first floor of the Iowa Memorial Union is an old office with a new name...what last year was familiar to students as the Scheduling Office is now the EVENT SERVICES DEPARTMENT. Mrs. Jean Kendall, the Event Services Director, offers some suggestions for students to facilitate the process of scheduling meetings and events: 1. If your organization meets on a regular basis, have at least one organizational meeting before you reserve additional dates for the remainder of the semester to avoid unnecessary changes in proposed meeting time or day. 2. Once the meeting dates have been firmly decided, submit the following information in writing: name, phone, and address of the person making the request; name of the sponsoring organization; time and date of the event; anticipated attendance; and the type of event that is going to take place. 3. In order to help keep labor costs down, the choice of the room assigned to your group is generally made on the basis of fitting your needs to a standard set-up in the room. To facilitate this, mention the type of set-up that would best accommodate your group and let the Event Services Department assign a room. If your event requires special arrangements, they'll do everything they can to provide them. 4. For major events that were scheduled last spring for the Ballroom or the Main Lounge, check with Mrs. Kendall several weeks prior to the date of the event to complete arrangements--i.e., table or chair set-up, staging, backdrops, mikes, lighting, ushers, security, coat check, tickets, etc. Questions concerning these procedures should be directed to 353-4950.
