October 10, 1969 STUDENT ACTIVITIES BULLETIN Page 2 will be involved in a Community Action Corps. The purpose is to go out and make the community aware of world problems and CIRUNA's activities through speaking engagements at various service organizations. Iowa City High School International Action: As well as adults and college students CIRUNA will be reaching out to high school students. Through much the same manner as the Community Action Corps, representatives of CIRUNA will try to establish high school counterparts to the collegiate organization. United Nations Radio Series: In addition to various service activities, CIRUNA also participates in various educational programs. One of these is a radio program on WSUI. The purpose of this program is to discuss, interview, and debate international topics of current importance. CIRUNA will sponsor fourteen radio programs all of which will involve student participation. Congressional Exchange Program: Although a non-partisan organization, CIRUNA feels a vital responsibility to keep our governments, both state and federal, aware of problems of international importance. The vehicle for making these problems known is our Congressional Exchange Program. Although not a lobby as such, this program will be keep our representatives informed of student activities and opinions in world affairs. Computer Simulation Games: On October 18th the first simulation game will be held in the Union. This game is entitled "Crisis in the Balkans", and simulates the situation that existed in 1950 during a drought in Yugoslavia. A maximum of 32 people will take power positions in the respective governments of the United States, the United Soviet Socialist Republic, and Yugoslavia and seek to determine how the situation with respect to a famine in Yugoslavia would be resolved. Future games to be held include the following: "Dangerous Parallels," which involves a hypothetical situation in the Far East. Great Decisions and International Affairs Seminars: Last year panel discussions and audience participation seminars were held over crisis situations in the United Nations. Events such as the invasion of Czechoslovakia and the Mid-East crisis brought vibrant comment from involved students and faculty and brought a realization that problems are not as simple as they seem. Again this year CIRUNA will conduct Great Decisions Programs as crises arise. Midwest Student Symposium: CIRUNA members will travel to Creighton University at Omaha on November 6-8 to participate individually in a regional symposium of students to discuss international issues which affect America. Reports of the symposium will be published and distributed through the national CIRUNA office. In addition, Concressmen and State Department officials will be in attendance to hear this new student voice. Students interested in development any of these groups or wishing to help cultivate more interest among the student body in international affairs and in the machinery of the United Nations are invited to join this council. Stop at CIRUNA headquarters, Activities Center, Iowa Memorial Union.
