Student Activities Bulletin University of Iowa Office of Student Affairs PLEASE POST Vol. IV, No. 4 October 24, 1969 "FROM THE DEAN'S DESK" As many of you know, I have for the past several years set aside an afternoon each week to make myself available to meet with students on a very informal basis in the Activities Center of the Union. This was motivated by my hope that in some small way I might serve to remind students that those of us in the Office of Student Affairs are here to serve students in the best educational ways possible, and hopefully to disabuse many of them of the notion that administrators are somehow unapproachable, unavailable, and uninterested. In past years, my chats with students have been held in an informal setting to put them at ease and to encourage open, free and confidential exchange. Topics have ranged from "automated" education and "drip dry" classes to gripes, complaints, and problems of a very personal nature. During the present academic year, we have decided to change the format and extend the schedule somewhat. Beginning Wednesday noon, November 5, and every Wednesday noon thereafter, I shall be glad to join with any group for lunch ("Dutch treat"!) that may wish to have discussion with me of any matters that are on their minds. Typical examples of such luncheon groups are residence halls units, fraternities, sororities, Student Senate or Union Board Committees, groups of off-campus students, or any small group of students who want to form a table for exchange of ideas. Following lunch, I would be available to talk to individual students at the dining site until approximately 2:30 p.m. Any group which may be interested should call be directly and personally through our office telephone, 353-3946, or drop by to make arrangements with me in my office at 111 Jessup Hall. In continuing my weekly schedule at the Union this year, the only changes are in time and place. Following luncheon engagements, I will be in the Wheel Room every Wednesday afternoon from 2:45 to 5:00 p.m., either roving about or having coffee at one of the tables. I hope that student groups will take the initiative in calling for lunch (otherwise, I may reverse the procedure); and also encourage individual students or groups to seek me out at the Wheel Room on Wednesdays.
