November 19, 1969 STUDENT ACTIVITIES BULLETIN Page 6 U of I MUSIC LIBRARY EXHIBITION IOWA CITY--Rare musical instruments ranging from Jew's harp to "little things that roar when you whirl them in the air" will be on display through March 12 at the University of Iowa Music Library, according to Frederick Crane, associate professor of music. The display contains nine sets of instruments from Iowa City collections. Because of limited space, each set will be on display for only two weeks. Exhibitions are: string instruments with necks, such as violins, Nov. 20-Dec. 4; free-reed instruments, such as harmonica, juice harps and early accordions, Dec. 4-18; end-blown and side-blown flutes, the ancestors of today's flutes, Dec. 18-Jan. 15; duct-flutes, which are recorders and whistles, Jan. 12-29; single-reed instruments, mostly clarinets, Jan. 29-Feb. 12; double reed, horns and trumpets, Feb. 12-26; and the Orff Schulwerk, Feb. 26-March 12. The Orff Schulwerk is a collection of instruments developed for improvisation in music written by Carl Orff, a German composer for children. The displays of rare musical instruments were started by Crane in conjunction with a class he is teaching about instruments, exotic samples from other countries, or rare instruments. Located in Eastlawn, the Music Library is open from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday, and 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday.
