December 10, 1969 STUDENT ACTIVITIES BULLETIN Page 5 U of I DEBATERS WIN HONORS Members of The University of Iowa varsity debate squad won second and fourth place honors out of the sixteen teams competing in a tournament at the University of Chicago. Steve Koch and Richard Edwards lost to Seton Hall, South Orange, New Jersey in the quarter final rounds giving them a 9-1 win-loss record in the tournament. Randy Mott lost to Seton Hall in the final round. In another tournament at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, debaters Gail Blaines, Dorla Hill, Richard Updegraff, and Leland Tomlinson received a rating of excellent. In individual events, Kate Argow and Mark Shafer received superios ratings in interpretive reading. Miss Hill received excellent ratings in oratory and radio speaking. Nick Niemeyer received an excellent rating in oratory. 1970 ORIENTATION LEADERS Two new co-chairmen of the 1970 Orientation program have been selected. They are Larry Audlehelm A3, Osceola, Iowa and Kitty Coen N3 Iowa City, Iowa. The applications for members of the Orientation Council are due December 10 in the Officer of Student Affairs. Application forms may be picked up in 111 Jessup Hall. MINI REVIEWS OF FILMS AT THE UNION December 10 (7 and 9) $.50 NIGHT AT THE OPERA (1935) Starring: The Marx Brothers The Marx Brothers at their peak in this satire on pomp surrounding grand opera, Groucho with dubious assistance from his brothers, crosses the ocean with an Italian opera company and contrives to get two young singers a break, their best foil, dowager Margaret Dumont, is a patron of the arts. Groucho's stateroom sequence and Harpo's backstage chase are comedy classics. December 11-12 (5, 7, and 9) and 12 (7 and 9) $.75 WARRENDALE (1967) Directed by Alan King - IOWA PREMIERE Probably one of the most telling, even shattering, documentary films ever made. "Warrendale" is a Canadian residential treatment center for emotionally disturbed children who are cared for in houses that combine living quarters and treatment facilities for 12 patients each and eight full-time staff members. Children and staff live together for months even years, as a "family". December 13 (5,7, and 9) and 14 (7 and 9) $.50 TOUCH OF EVIL Starring: Orson Welles, Charlton Heston, Janet Leigh. Two newlyweds are the targets of a sinister plot in a Mexican bordertown. Gripping action and suspense mount as a crooked cop plants evidence on his victims before his downfall.
