January 5, 1970 STUDENT ACTIVITIES BULLETIN Page 5 SURVEY ON THIEVES MARKET The Union Board Research Area recently conducted a survey concerning the Thieves Market held on campus for the sales of student art works. The survey was completed by approximately three-fourths of the people attending the December 7 Thieves Market. Several trends were drawn from the following results. 1. Organization of table arrangement and table placement seemed to be appreciated by both the artists themselves and the viewing public. 2. The artists seemed to feel that this year's practice of assignment of tables was an advancement over the previous Market arrangements. 3. It was suggested by several people that certain sections (certain tables) should contain a certain type of art, rather than a miscellaneous arrangement. It is felt that this would destroy the nature of a Market since no market-Thieves' or otherwise, is set up on such an organized basis. 4. Advertisement in the Iowa City Press Citizen seemed to be quite effective. 5. It was at first the thought that upper classmen would be more heavily represented in attendance because of a general attitude that freshmen don't know what is going on around campus. The accumulated data showed this to be without support whatsoever, if not indeed the reverse. 6. It appears that use of Radio Station KICR could be greatly expanded. Drawing only seven responses out of 1128 when at times it had been an extensive coverage of the listening public (from the residence halls), seems quite an inefficiency either by the organizers of the Market in not utilizing the medium or the station itself in not promoting University activities. 7. There seemed to be quite a demand for more frequent Thieves Markets. 8. There seemed to be quite a demand for small inexpensive items. 9. It is suggested that all artists be requested to appear at least one half hour before the start of the Market, so all remaining empty tables could be utilized by the artists present, giving them enough time to get set up, rather than waiting until 1:00 p.m. when there is no time left.
