TAX INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS New Federal Tax Return The old card form federal tax return, Form 1040A, has been discontinued and a new combined Form 1040 and 1040A has bee designed to fit all tax situations. However, students wanting to file a "short form" will be glad to know that page one of the new 1040 is the equivalent of the old 1040A card and calls for the same information but in a different format. The new tax return uses a "building block" style to make it fit the different tax situations. For example: If a taxpayer itemizes deductions, he adds Schedule A -- Has interest and dividends over $100.00 -- he adds Schedule B -- Business income, Schedule C--etc., etc. It's easy to prepare the new return but read your instructions carefully. Don't let your refund be delayed by an error. Student Tax Refunds Don't pass up your federal tax refund. Every year many students, who have been working part-time, relinquish small tax refunds so their parents can claim their exemption. This is generally not necessary since both you and your parents can claim your exemption under these circumstances: (1) You do not file a joint return with your spouse. (2) Your parents furnished over half of your total support. (3) You were either: (a) a full-time student during some part of five calendar months of the year, or (b) under age 19 at the end of the year.
