Student Activities Bulletin University of Iowa Office of Student Affairs PLEASE POST Vol. IV, No. 13 April 17, 1970 ENVIRONMENTAL TEACH-IN Campus Ministers, students, faculty and staff have combined efforts in support of an environmental teach-in to be held the week of April 20. According to Constance Heneke of Living Iowans for a Healthy Environment, the goals of the teach-in are to educate the population on problems the nation is facing, to stimulate action and to improve our environment, and to provide an overview of the complexities of problems in our environment and the need for American cooperation. The activities begin Monday, April 20. The morning program will be sponsored by the Medical School. (Times and rooms will be announced later.) Monday afternoon, there will be a Festival of Life celebrating the beauties of life and mourning the destruction of our country from pollution. The Festival will be held on the pentacrest. The schedule for the rest of the week is as follows: Tuesday, April 21 - 300 Chemistry Building 1:00 p.m. "Air Pollution" by Dr. William Hausler, State Bacteriology Laboratory. 2:30 p.m. "Water Pollution" by Mr. Buckmaster, Director of Iowa Water-Pollution Commission, Mr. Jake Dumelle, Director of Great Lakes Draining Basin, and Dr. Morris, Associate Director of the State Bacteriologic Laboratory. 4:00 p.m. "Solit Wastes Management Treatment" by Lillia Abrons, Graduate Assistant in Civil Engineering, Richard Dague, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering, Dr. Cecil Lue-Hing, Environmental Engineer from St. Louis, and Sidney Schachtmeister, Director of Johnson County Health Program. 6:30 p.m. Showing on Education Television: A discussion of Pollution Problems and a summary of the University of Iowa Teach-In 225 Chemistry Building 8:00 p.m. "Pollution Media and public Awareness" by George Alexander, Science editor of Newsweek magazine Wednesday, April 22 - Art Building Auditorium 9:00 a.m. "Pesticides" by Keith Long, Iowa Pesticides Society 10:30 a.m. "Land Use" by Everett B. Speaker, Governor's representative to Public Land Law Reserve Committee, Robert Nethercut, Director of Community Services Metropolitan Council of the Twin Cities, and James McDonald, Professor of Law at the University of Wisconsin. Law School Lounge 1:00 p.m. "Role of Law in Environmental Protection" by Lee Rodgers, General council for Environmental Defense Fund and a panel of law students
