can talk, and -' 'Wait,' murmured the fern. A minute later, John looked up to see Peggy at the door of his cell. Her face was wet with tears. 'John,' she sobbed. Catching her hand, John tried to think of something to say. 'Did you do it?' she begged. 'No!' he cried, 'but how can I prove it?' Her words had been relayed to him by the plant which suddenly quivered. 'Someone else coming,' it announced abruptly. A few minutes later, a slim, dapper man hove into sight. He had a thin sneering face, with furtive black eyes. 'Stephen Roxe,' murmured Peggy. She shrank back as he approached. His eyes ran over her in veiled insolence that brought a quick flush to her cheeks. Tossing her head, she turned back to John, who was watching anxiously. Smiling thinly, Roxe looked at John. 'Too bad, eh?' he sneered. But John was not listening. His eyes were on the carnation in Roxe's lapel. 'Quick,' he hissed, 'is that flower alive?' 'Just a moment,' said the fern imperturbably, 'yes, it's alive, but not for long. Why?' 'Ask it if it knows where that man was on that night.' The fern repeated the question. The answer was faint, John could not catch it, but the fern appeared to hear it easily. 'It says that the man went to a hole in 41
