The fern, an interested listener, translated for John. 'Did you hear that! Peggy,' cried John, 'call the guard!' Roxe suddenly slipped back and snatched out a gun. 'You can't pin this on me,' he snarled. John became aware of a helpless fury as the fern murmured something he could not quite catch. But the carnation heard. A thin white vapor drifted upward from it, clouding about Roxe's face. Roxe staggered, dropping his gun and clawing at his eyes. 'Help!' he cried hoarsely, 'it burns!' By this time, the guard appeared. He took command of the situation at once. 'I heard most of it,' he remarked quietly, 'and I don't mind telling you I'm glad.' A few hours later, John and Peggy - and the fern - were all together in the laboratory once more. 'But why should Roxe want to steal his own money?' asked Peg. John smiled. 'It wasn't his money.
