There is another kind that no third-party accounts, no individual anticipations, can do justice. If you have lived very long, you probably have some acquaintance with both types. Science-fiction conventions are of the second sort. Disregarding limited exceptions (which are always dragging on valid generalizations), anyone who attends one for the first time finds it different from his expectations and better. Whether this is true of the conventions of mundane groups we need not inquire. The point is--take it on the authority of those who have attended--it is true of our gatherings. Only two months remain in which to mature your plans for attending the Pacificon. It's time to stop hoping thru a haze that a way will turn up--if that's what you've been doing--and make certain. Material mixed in with the ads includes something on atomic power, a proposed project for top authors to write tales of the civilization of 2050,. Ads, which are gratis this first issue, include Pacificon plugs, three seekers of Fancyclopedias, specialized grab bag bundles offered by the Dweller in the Garage, Evans auctioning his prozine collection with price reserved and on the 10%-above-next-highest-bid basis, an anonymous ad "Demand More SEX in scientifiction", announcement of a subscription-only British prozine,. "the frumious[?] bandersnatch" Apr 46 (Schumann; multicolor hektoed). A little slip to be sent the multitudes who are writing Phil on the basis of a Fantasy Advertiser insertion by Ackerman that Schumann would give copies of the Outsider to the first 150 people who open correspondence with him. SPARK Apr 46 (Spelman; published by Daugherty). Paul Carter explains his forthcoming story The Last Objective, and mentions a Messcon [despairing shriek].
