TED MARCH SCIENTI-TALES PAGE 15... secretary of Stockton had any inkling of what was going on. The laboratory, some five miles away from the nearest town in the Ozark Mountains, was a good hiding place, especially from the press who were always on Stockton's neck to learn of what new experiment he was financing. One reporter, with a pencil and paper, stood hiding in some bushes that were on the outskirt of the big clearing, some twenty yards away from the laboratory. The cage stood eight feet high, by four feet square. Two sides were made of a new metal, Electricite, which was very sensitive and costly. The two other sides were with bars, also made of the same metal. The floor was six inch solid of Electricite. The coiling was barred. The two solid sides were composed of switches, tubes, wires and wire coils plus other instruments, comprehensible only to the professor. A thick coil of wires ran down the side of the solid wall, to the ground where it united into one wire which ran twenty yards to the laboratory and into the section which was the main part of the Time Machine. The coils went into a box affair resembling a radio, but the difference was noticeable. This affair of tubes, dynamos and many unknown to the ordinary layman, was the real source of the Time Machine. It received the electric power from it which set in motion the factions of time and transferred it, through the wire, to the Time Cage, which did the actual traveling into TIME. =:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=;=:=:=:=: CHAPTER FOUR # A MOMENTOUS OCCASION COME =:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=;=:=:=:=: The reporter sensed something momentous was at hand as he furiously short-handed all details that he could see from his hiding place. The professor and Stockton were in front of the cage as the professor announced that he had finished connecting to the main machine. "At last my dream has come true! We shall travel to into Time!" exclaimed the professor, a feverish and expectant look in his eyes. The newspaperman stopped writing at these words. He was astounded. Then with a smile on his face, he continued writing. His thoughts were on the scoop he would get, in getting the facts and details of this experiment before any other paper. Stockton and the professor entered the cage! The moment had come! Stockton, with an excited tremor in his voice said; "Where shall we go Professor? Into the future?" and before Van Loon could answer, he continued, "That would be swell! We would see the cities of the future. Whether civilization has advanced, but human character is always the same and wars are still fought. Whether man has reached a perfect state of "Utopia" or has gone back to the stages of barbarian. Or perhaps!" With a loud "No!" the professor stopped Stockton, "We go into the past!" "Ah...good! Then we will see the Prehistoric Animals! See how man came into being. His evolution from a germ to a cave man, and so on till the present!" With a hand on the switch, the professor answered, "No!" more as if talking to himself. "We go back only TWENTY-FIVE YEARS." and so saying he pulled the switch. =:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=:=;=:=:=:=: The reporter was writing word per word on the conversation.
