TED MARCH SCIENTI-TALES PAGE 17 age as Stockton, made it understood that his questioning was a matter of formality; more as an inquiry than an investigation. Van Loon was quite, probably exhausted from his efforts to free himself, he stood as if in a stupor, listening to Stockton, who was giving a summary of the events that had tragically ended by sending the two men to the hospital. Devon looked at the professor, trying to remember where he had seen him before. His face was quite familiar, but it seemed that he just could not place him. While Nosey thus contemplating, the door of the ward opened, and two white clad men entered. At the sight of the two men Van Loon once again began his frenzied notions. "That's him!" shouted one of the two men. Cheif of Police, Brandon, with an indignant and puzzled look, roared. "What is the meaning of this?!" "Cheif Brandon," answered the taller of the two, "we are from the Dennis Alcott Asylum For The INSANE! Two and a half months ago an inmate escaped, namely the professor." The professor had calmed down and with a touching sadness in his eyes began to cry softly. The representatives of the asylum continued, "In the afternoon papers we recognized the picture of him, who up to now had evaded our search for him. That is why we have come here; to make arrangements to have him taken back to the asylum." Pencils were flying over paper as Nosey Devons and his companions of profession denounced this new revelation. Stockton was dumbfounded. He had never suspected that Van Loon was insane. True he had noticed his eccentricity in action and manners, but scientists were noted for their eccentricness. Falteringly, he asked the man, "Are you sure you have the right man? He did not seem crazy to me. A crazy man could not have enough intelligence to go a hoax on a scientific experiment as that of a Time Machine. His calculations, reasonings and explanations seemed quite reasonable to me." The asylum attendant, with a whimsical smile on his face on his face replied, "Perhaps it is better if I tell the whole story concerning him. Then you will understand. Know that this man was really a professor of physics and all sciences in general. He was an authority on Time and Time Travelling, and it's possibilities. An inventor, and one of the few who understood Einstein's Theory of Relativity. The Professor was married to a beautiful woman. He was happy with her and his only other love was his science and his laboratory. Everything was perfect for the Professor. He would have done great things had not fate taken a hand. His wife was killed in a train wreck in Ohio, fifteen years ago. His dreams shattered, his happiness broken, the Professor went mad. He vowed to build a Time Machine and go into the past and save her. Sent first to the hospital for medical care then to the Insane Asylum, when found that he was incurably insane. He has escaped from us four times. He was caught before long; but this last one we could not find him." he paused, then continued, "So you see Mr. Stockton why his calculations seemed correct? Nevertheless his distorted mind; no longer brilliant, blundered in building the Time Machine, which in some way or other exploded." So concluding, he looked with a breath of pity at the erstwhile professor who was still crying softly. Stockton felt sorry for the professor. "I wish there was some way in which we could help Professor Van Loon regain his sanity!" he exclaimed. "No? What is his real name then? Who is he?" "His...!"
