Detours September 1940 - 1:4 ------------------------------ THEIR OWN PETARD by H.C. KOENIG FROM A LETTER BY CHARLES HIDLEY IN "FANTASY NEWS" Vol 5 No 4. "....Too, your business-like manner in the editorial and your future dealings with contributors and subscribers is proof of the success of Fantasy News..." The sentence of the week. As Chauvenet points out, it is a lovely example of double mal-treatment of To be. That's putting it rather mildly. Clairvoyant Hidley, in another section of his letter, writes that he collects 20 scientifiction magazines, Life, a few news maps, etc. Might I suggest that he include a few books on English Grammar? FROM "LIQUID HELL" IN "FUTURE FICTION" VOLUME 1 NO. 3 "'Damn your bridge!' he hissed." and FROM "THE DARK SWORDSMEN OF SATURN" IN "PLANET STORIES" I:3 "'In here a moment', hissed Yald. The membership of the Ancient Order of Sibilators is increasing by leaps and bounds. Isn't it about time for the editors of the various magazines to step in and remedy this absurd hissing situation? Particularly those editors who make a business of helping embryo writers made an honest living! FROM "FANTASY NEWS" VOLUME 4 NUMBER 23 "A bull session of authors and editors was held as usual which John W. Campbell jr., Willy Ley, L. Ron Hubbard, the above mentioned newly arrived authors, and other well-known author friends of Mr. Campbell were expected to attend." Sounds as though that paragraph was written by one of your cub reporters, Mr. Sykora. "Were expected to attend." Migawd, the session was held, wasn't it? Did they or didn't they attend? Or did your reporter leave the affair too early? And, by the way, is there any significance in that word, "bull"?
