13..........THE FANTASITE [boxed] "THE FNEH FILE" [/boxed] Being an extract from the personal records of an Innocent Bystander by [underlined] damon knight [/underlined] [handwritten] Received, [/handwritten] MAY 16: A letter postmarked 'Station B' and 'New York, N. Y.' inside a plain sheet of paper (watermarked 'CRONICON'), unsigned, bearing the following in pica typing: The Tragedy of a Fneh Once upon a time in the land of ghu, The domain of our lord, the great ghughu, Lived a little fneh who was known by few, And who was scarcely e'en known by ghughu. [Drawing of a creature in a shoe] The little fneh's home was an immense shoe; A shoe that was new, and a good one too. It so protected and hid him from view That he was scarcely e'en known by ghughu. And the little fneh had such great power. He could make sweet lemons, turn sugar sour. He could make rocks sneeze, make deserts flower. Magic scarcely e'en known by ghughu. He could make soft steel, give a roach the gout; He could make phosphor curse, and make trees shout; He could make glass opaque and make hair sprout From places scarcely e'en known by ghughu. But the sad little fneh was all alone. He wanted to have just one companion Who would call him "hon", would be full of fun, Yet would be scarcely e'en known by ghughu. He.worked very hard, the poor little fneh; He worked on clean white snow and earth and air. He worked to get just one companion fair That would be scarcely e'en known by ghughu. He worked on fire and rock and teeth and hair and skin and water and sugar and chair, But he failed to make a companion fair That would be scarcely e'en known by ghughu. [Drawing of an angry creature jumping] The fneh's small face took on a deep red hue. He became so mad he destroyed his shoe And tried to destroy the land of ghu; But this was scarcely e'en known by ghughu. He was soon dead, the angry little fneh, Dead from a lack of snow and earth and air And water and sugar and shoe and chair; But this was scarcely e'en known by ghughu.
