THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA OFFICE OF SPECIAL SUPPORT SERVICES UPWARD BOUND PROJECT DIRECTOR BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY To develop, implement, and administer the activities of a pre-college preparatory program designed to generate the skills and motivations necessary for success in education beyond high school among young people from low-income backgrounds and inadequate secondary school preparation. CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES -Direct the planning, development, and implementation of the Project's programs and activities -Write and negotiate proposals for funds for the program -Develop, negotiate, and administer the Project's budget -Plan and coordinate program components: a. Interview, select, and appraise Upward Bound Staff b. Evaluate the performance of assigned staff and recommend salary increases, promotions, and dismissals. c. Select students for the program d. Advise and counsel students in the program on person problems related to educational, financial, and vocational needs e. Assist former students with college plans or tutoring help. f. Coordinate various advisory bodies -Coordinate, where feasible, services and activities of the Upward Bound Project with the activities of other student services and academic offices -Maintain a project records and prepare special and periodic reports as required -Carry out public relations duties for the program RELATED DUTIES Work with students, faculty, staff, educational agency personnel and other community persons in the development and implementation of the overall objectives of the Upward Bound Project. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Direction is received from the Director, Special Support Services. Coordination with other Student Services Offices is facilitated by the Office of Special Support Services. SUPERVISION EXERCISED Functional and administrative supervision is exercised over professional and support staff.
