University of Iowa Keynote Address 25th Anniversary of the Chicano/Latino Native American Cultural Center December 14, 1996 Rusty Barcelo Ph.D I would like to begin by telling you how wonderful and yes, strange it is to be back here at the University of Iowa and how very special it is to be part of this day commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Chicano/Latino and Native American Cultural Center. It is good to see familiar and new faces, but most importantly I am reassured that the center is alive and well as symbolized by this celebration. It gives me a great sense of pride and pleasure to gaze upon the work of students and artists which have this center the warmth and political statement we enjoy: The Chicano Royal Airforce mural Hidalgo: Marco Raya Aztec Calendar The Eagle and Drum Ft, Madison American Indian prisoners who created an image to symbolize the union between Indians and Chicanos. All of these works were by individuals who were inspired by what this center represented. 1
