The activism of today finds many of you engaged in different organizations throughout campus as leaders promoting the issues of more diverse populations. The center provides an important space for us to sharpen our skills so that we can successfully move in and out of the multiple words we represent without losing that part of our cultural identity that gives us strength. The center was never meant to be a space for us to segregate ourselves but rather a space where we can be nourished among others like ourselves so that we might survive and contribute to the broader university community -- it is like going home and experiencing something familiar which helps us locate ourselves so that we can continue to move forward. It was also meant to be a space where other communities could come to celebrate and learn more about our different cultures our needs, our contributions through lectures, through art. The center serves as a bridge providing people with a way to experience who we are, which in turn serves to address and overcome the fears of difference. And so the Center is like a touch stone, or anchor- giving you tools and resources and fostering a belief in yourself that you can, that you must, take out into the world. The Center can provide you with a place from which you can make connections to the larger University community. I encourage you to share your experiences, views and ideas through participating in other student organizations and university activities. It is also essential that you keep up with your academics. 9
