Chicano Students Protest Some 20 University of Iowa Mexican-American students have protested what they termed "the gross neglect" of the university toward their ethnic group. Their protests came during two peaceful pickets on the campus Thursday. The group said there should be an "intensive recruitment" of Mexican-American students and faculty and that university departments should become "sensitized" to their needs. At the conclusion of a dedication ceremony for the $15.7 million Basic Sciences building, one demonstrator went to the podium and told departing guests that the university lacks an adequate number of Mexican-American professional and medical students. Phillip Hubbard, university vice president, said Mexican-American enrollment has increased annually on campus since 1967 when the university began a "determined" effort to recruit more minority students.
