LOS ANGELES--A historic occasion in Chicano affairs in California took place on Friday, Aug. 26, 1971 when the state leaders of six Chicano groups met to discuss issues of deep concern to their people. California GI Forum Chairman Antonio E. Gallegos met with Californis [sic] LULAC President Frank Galaz, Mexican American Issues Conference Chairman Manuel Banda Jr., MAPA Pres. Armando O. Rodriguez, Comisión Femenil Mexicana Chairman Francisca Flores, Association of Mexican American Educators President Roberto Aguilar, and Pete V. Villa, National President of LULAC. Prime matter discussed was support of the respective organizations of Assemblyman Peter Chacon in his efforts to have the California legislature investigate the Los Angeles Police Dept. Chicano community relationships and look into the deaths of Guillermo and Gallardo Sánchez. They issued the following statement to the news media: On the anniversary of Ruben Salazar's killing and the Aug. 29, 1970 Police Riot; and in view of the acquittal of the four police officers involved in the death of Guillermo and Lallardo Sanchez, officers of six Mexican American organizations (GI Forum LULAN, MAPA, MANIC CFM AMAE) in joint meeting voted to support Assemblyman Peter Chacon in his request for a State Legislature investigation of the Los Angeles Police Dept.'s relations with the Chicano community and into the death of the Sanchez cousins. The State Legislature, the Chicano leaders suggested, could also look into the killing of Francisco Garcia in Thermal by officers of the Los Angeles Police Dept. ********************************** He who steals a million is a financier He who steals half a million is only a defaulter He who steals a quarter of a million is a swindler He who steals fifty thousand is a knave But he who steals a pair of boots or a loaf of bread is a scoundrel and deserves hanging.
