FROM THE EDITOR Albert Olvera I came across a newsletter/paper a couple of weeks age called [[underline]]The Educator.[[end underline]] It had some interesting articles in it on Chicanos and the Chicano Movement. Needless to say the articles were all slams and putdowns on the Chicanos. This newspaper is inline with the sort of material you read out of a John Birch Society paper. The name is very misleading, [[underline]] The Educator[[end underline]], it educates only on a one-sided basis. It gives a lot of information that seems a bit too vague. Here are just some of the things I have come across in the newspaper. [[underline]]When they say "Chicano" they call you bastard.[[end underline]] The word Chicano comes to mean many things to the people of Mexican American people living in the United States, but to Gabe Aguilar it means you are a Bastard. Mr. Aguilar is a supposedly long time student of Mexican Indian History and a graduate of Archeology and Natural History Museum school in Mexico Dity. For that matter, I am a long time student of American History here at the University of Iowa. Mr. Aguilar states that the term Chicano means "illegitimate" child. He also states that people of Latin extraction are opposed to being called Chicano. The article does not say if Mr. Aguilar is a Mexican or a Mexican American. I took it upon myself to find out who Mr. Aguilar was. If a paper such as [[underline]]The Educator[[end underline]] was a well educated paper then it probably had some prominent people to obtain it's resources. I went to a Latin American professor here on campus, Dr. A. Hale. (con't. next page col.1.) [[underline]]Foul-Mouthed, Filthy-Minded, Dirty-Brown Berets, Un-Spanish, Un-Mexican, and Un-American.[[end underline]] This article was unreal! It starts off by telling how big and bad the Brown Berets are to people. How they encourage Junior High and High School Students to defy school authorities. It goes on to add how persons calling themselves "Chicanos" had beaten students with clubs and that later the paper that published the stories on Chicano violence was bombed 'causing' $ 10,000 American dollars worth of damage!!! [[underline]]The Educator[[end underline]]states that it is not impossible to link the incidents to the Brown Berets. Rumors have it that the Berets in Fresno are training each other in the fields of handling explosives and hand to hand combat. The local law officials came across a bullet-riddled car. It had been shot with ball bearings and bolts. It was the target of both mortars and set explosives. No one (con't. next page col.2.) 1
