4 HUELGA LA CAUSA WINS IN IOWA CITY On Thursday September 13, the Student Senate of the University of Iowa passed a resolution supporting the UFW LETTUCE BOYCOTT and urged the University to abstain from purchasing non-union lettuce. The resolution also urges all students at the University to support the UFW and boycott all non-union lettuce. a Daily Iowan (student newspaper) editorial read in part "We can live without lettuce, but the United Farmworkers cannot live without justice." At the Student Senate meeting Antonio Zavala, with several members of the Chicano Indian Student Union members present, gave a brief talk on the goals of the Farmworkers' struggle for better living and working conditions. He urged the Student Senate to respond to the issue of the Lettuce Boycott. Afterwards, the resolution was passed unanimously; A victory for LA CAUSA! During Fall registration, the members of the Chicano Indian Student Union and the Student Support Committee for the UFW collected in three days, 800 pledges from students who pledged to boycott lettuce at the University, in Iowa City, and to support La Causa. Hellen Duffy and Antonio Zavala, heading the Student Support Committee for the UFW at the University of Iowa, attended the Iowa Lettuce Boycott meeting on September 9 in Waterloo, Iowa. Results of the meeting were the election of Olando Valdez of Des Moines as state director of the Lettuce Boycott. A resolution was passed urging all Lettuce Boycott volunteers throughout the state to begin a check of food stores in their hometowns and to concentrate with greater effort on the pledges. On September 16, Mexican Independence Day and/or Chicano Liberation Day, the Student Support Committee for the UFW leafletted Iowa City with information on the Lettuce Boycott and collected more than 200 new pledges in support of La Causa. Four members also canvassed food stores and asked them to buy UFW Union lettuce. VENCEREMOS! VIVA LA CAUSA!
