The Governor has agreed to meet with Chicano community organizations and individuals that are supporters of a bill, SF 424, that if passed in the state will create a 'Spanish Speaking Commission'. The Commission would deal with broad aspects of Chicano life in the state which merits inmediate attention such as the education of La Raza. One of the initiators of the bill in the state House has been Bill Gluba. Other state representatives presently need to vote favarably on the bill if it is to pass. Chicanos in the state are welcome to come to the meeting on June 19. As soon as we know more about the progress of Bill SF 424 we will let you know. +++ LA RAZA UNIDA REORGANIZES AT MEETING AT IOWA CITY. For a while there was a lag in the efforts of La Raza Unida but it seems that now the kinks have been worked out and the organization sis headed for an active period. At Iowa City on May 5 new elections of officers were held. The result was the election of PAULA CAMPOS ,a Chicana student, as the Chairman and Jesus Campos of Burlington as vice-chairman, Paula Campos is only 19 years of age, attends the University of Iowa, and has been active with the Movement since coming to school. She has stated that she will create new changes and will see that La Raza Unida moves together in unity. La Raza Unida of Iowa is composed of other Chicano organizations or individuals that want to change the conditions that affect La Raza in the state. To Paula Campos and La Raza Unida of Iowa we say adelante con nuestra mision de luchar por Los Chicanos. +++ [emblem] CHICANO CARNALES DEMAND SCHOOL TO BE OPENED IN CHICAGO ILL. Chicano High School students had a walk-out in Chicago on June 5 to state their discontent with the proposed closing of Froebel branch of Harrison High School. During the show of resistance by the high school students 7 were arrested by the police.Three days later however officials from the Chicago Board of Education stated that the recommendation to vacate Froebel would be withdrawn. This is a victory for the Chicano students, their parents, and the barrio organisations that helped mobilize the community effort to stop the closing of Froebel. The proposed closing would have thrust more than 3,000 students into Harrison High School. Harrison High School is already overpopulated and understaffed, some of the concerned about-to=be-removed students contended. To meet this educational squeeze Chicano leaders in the barrio (called Pilsen by some and La 'Diez y Oco' by others) are working toward the gathering of resources to construct a new high school in the barrio. The proposed Chicano High School would be constructed on a location and a curriculum to meet the needs of the Chicano high school students in the barrio. At present 79% of high school age Chicanos drop-out of school,in the Chicago area alone. ++ LA UNION HACE LA FUERZA. +++ THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES AT U OF IOWA Chicano students at the University of Iowa are continuing their fight to established a CHICANO STUDIES DEPARTMENT. A previous demonstration netted a talk with the president of the university/. Upon presentation of ten demands the president charged the Chicano students with "reverse racism". The demands asked for hiring of Chicano staff, proffesors, more students, and establishment of Chicano Studies course. The Chicano students at the University of Iowa are determined to establish a CHICANO STUDIES DEPT. and will continue the fight until the Victory. +++ 4
