4 ANGEL MORENO...LA RAZA UNIDA PARTY Angel Moreno, who will be here in Iowa for the CHICANO '73 IN IOWA CONFERENCE, is running for the 7th Congressional District in the city of Chicago. Angel Moreno is running as an Independent. He is the Chairman of LA RAZA UNIDA PARTY for the state of Illinois. The 7th Congressional District is within the two Chicano neighborhoods, barrios, in Chicago, in addition to the side composition of Blacks in the West Side and Boricuas in the North Side. Angel Moreno states the following: Major concentrations of Latinos, Blacks and white laborers and proffessional workers live in the 7th Congressional District. Our district also harbors the downtown Chicago area with its big banks and businesses. Yet the people who run them make the administrative decisions that control our lives, don't live in the district. The president of one of these banks, and a staunch Daley supporter, became Secretary of the Treasury in the Nixon Cabinet. For us this means that the two-party system that should be our guarantee of fair and equal representation has become a two-headed monster bent on our enslavement and exploitation. We provide the manpower in the shops, offices, construction gangs and factories. Yet we do not run this city. We only provide the labor that makes money for the people who control this city and nation. It is time to regain control of our future. Join me in creating an independent challenge to the system that controls our lives through Mr. Daley and Mr. Nixon. (sic) ANGEL MORENO will not be running in the primaries in April. He will be contesting the machine's candidate in June 5th. Sister Irene and eleven other members of a recent American health delegation visited the Republic of China for 26 days. She may be the first Chicana nun to visit China since 1948 when the country was liberated under Mao's leadership. She was in the country from Feb. 13 through March 12. Sister Irene related to the students her experiences which included the aspects of the classless society of China, a dynamic and highly motivated society, where all people are not threatened by hunger, lack of medical attention, jobs, or highly expensive education. All these are free to all the people in China. She mentioned that she felt well at ease with her Chinese host. She felt that the Chinese can well relate to the third world people. There were three blacks in her group. She mentioned also, that she was fascinated with the application in China of acupuncture as an anesthetic. She saw a male patient undergo open lung surgery while he sipped tea and watched - after a single needle, he felt no pain. Through the slides from her trip to China, the students had a very good presentation of a country which was slandered and whose image was distorted in this country from many year back. She made a suggestion which a lot of the students agreed with, her suggestion was that she would like a group of Chicano students to visit China. We all agree that this could be a very good project to consider. ARRIBA CON EL PUEBLO.
