7 THE KEYHOLE COMMITTEE The Keyhole Committee is a student organization which actively seeks out the low Income and minority high school students for the purpose of informing and encouraging these students of the higher education that is available to them. This is accomplished by bringing the student to campus for a LOOK at the academic, social, financial and cultural aspects that are offered at this university. The students attent classes, meet and discuss ideas and their questions are answered about different areas of interest. They receive valuable information which could help defray cost for those planning to attend a state University. Most important the high school student have the opportunity ot meet with other students of the same Culture or Raza. This reinforces the idea that higher education is not just for the upper and middle class Anglos. The areas from which we plan to bring students this year are: Davenport, Des Moines, Muscatine, Waterloo, Ft. Madison, Tama, +Cedar Rapids. Due to cutback in funding there will be fewer trips and visits and regretfully, fewer students. However, proposals are being submitted to organizations on campus for additional funds. Help will be needed. There will be a general meeting within the next few weeks. it is important that we help to inform other Chicano and Indian students about this organization and the opportunities it has to offer. If you have any questions contact: Elisa Sanchez or Paula Campos at CIASU Phone: 353-4753 [emblem] DIA DE LOS PADRES *** Each year the University of Iowa has two dates set aside to honor parents. in the Fall there is Father Day and int he Spring there is Mother Day. On these dates it appears that most students' parents take advantage of the planned activities. This appearance is deceiving. Very few Chicano Indian or Black parents come to campus. PORQUE? WHY? There are a number of reasons and to illustrate my point I'll present a few. 1: Since the bulk of this University is Anglo, the programs for both days are geared for just those types of individuals - Anglos. 2. Since most of our padres are of the working class and have younger children at home, it is difficult to attend this type of function. No Dinero. 3. The very number of Anglos vs Chicanos Indian and Blacks have a tendency to over whelmed anyone, parent or student. I believe that these obstacles are to be overcome. Our padres would like to visit. What is the answer? The answer is to have our own days for our padres to visit the University. It is for this reason that a commettee is being formed to create our own Dia de los Padres. The initial meeting will be at the CIACC Oct. 4th at 6;30 pm. There will be a series of meetings following. If all interested, please contact: Rosa Higareda, Ramona Camacho, or Elisa Sanchez at Phone: 353-4753 " -6014 [photo] NECESITAMOS GUARDERIAS INFANTILES
