4 [emblem of face] ADELANTE RAZA It is necessary that we, as Chicano students, fathers, mothers, hombres y mujeres take some time and reflect on the concrete situation that we face in this university and, most importantly, come up with an ideology, an organization and a program (a plan), so that we can continue to struggle against the forces that we confront daily. This requires, however, a deeper understanding. This deeper understanding requires that we examine our position as students in a university setting so that it reflects that particular situation. This means that we must examine our motives and our idealogies as they relate to our lives, barrio, nuestra gente. This evaluation requires that we thoroughly review why we came to this university or go to any university for that matter. It is possible to come up with a quick answer. However, this answer has a much deeper meaning in the sense that what we do as progressive Chicano students while in this university, and later when we leave has a tremendous effect on all our lives and our people. This is true whether we are progressive or opportunistas. We must understand that our coming to a university is not to become an exploiter but to organize our communities in a collective struggle. We also must understand that we do not intend to become exploiters either by ourselves or by serving as the intermediaries of others to exploit our people or people in general. We must not have hope of working for a big corporation , or of designing new methods of research to reach the barrio and exploit it. We must understand that to act in such a manner is acting like an exploiter and that is parasitic! When we graduate we must have an understanding of who our enemies are: exploiters of all colors. We must develop our skills for the creation of a new society in which our community can determine their own lives in a collective sense. We must understand that as individuals we can have good ideas, but those ideas must become realities in the collective participation of our people. Individualism is contrary to our own collective survival. This is because to be successful in an individual way, in a capitalistic way, we need someone to exploit. To prove this all you need do is see how the Black and Chicano barrios are experiencing further exploitation by their own "successful" entrepreneurs. We must understand that is all we want is a piece of the pie then we are also exploiters and we will end up exploiting our own people and ourselves. We must continue the struggle for the right of our people to determine their lives, and we should become aware that this does not clash with the interests of the Blacks and Native Americans because we understand that we are struggling against the same beast and against the exploitation of our people. Again, if we struggle for a collective way of life the need for individualism will be needless. We must see and learn that as Chicano students our best interests lie with those of our communities no matter how "right" we think we are. We must understand that by studying and investigating the issues of our community, our people as a unit will determine how correct our thinking is if we really represent their interests. If the people are with us and we are not opportunistas then our actions are in the interests of the people and our thinking is correct. We must never forget that as progressive Chicanos, liberalism will get us nowhere. Our people have not survived all these years of struggle not due to their liberalism, but because they have
