One of the basic tenets of Indian life is humbleness...the sad fact about the non-Indian world is that most of it is not based on the truth, and that is why it is falling apart and crumbling. It is crumbling now..... it is falling apart.... Here on this island, we've got so much more. It has so much in the way of promise, hope for our own people. Our people are slow to react to something of this nature and they want to find out how much truth there is in it. It's hard to live a lie." -RICHARD OAKES, Mohawk Alcatraz Island --- Suicide among young Indians is the second leading cause of death - three times higher than the national average. ------ "AIM concerns itself with the nature of social change, including the government system, economic realities, educational processes, and social attitudes and values. We are simply doing those things that all Indians agree should be done, in a way that will be effective." *DENNIS BANKS RUSSELL MEANS CLYDE BELLECOURT AIM has never claimed to be representative of all the Indian People - we represent the facts of Indian life......AIM is a movement, rather than an organization. There is no formal manifesto or statement of purpose -RUSSELL MEANS "As Indians, we will never have the efficient organization that gains great concessions from society in the marketplace. We will never have a powerful lobby, or be a smashing political force. But we will have the intangible unity which has carried us through centuries of persecution. We are a people unified by our humanity - not a pressure group unified for conquest. And from our greater strength, we shall wear down the white man and finally outlast him.....WE SHALL ENDURE." -From Custer Died For Your Sins Vine Deloria IF WE SURRENDER, WE DIE "Our ideas will overpower your ideas. We are going to cut the country's whole value system to shreds. It isn't important that there are only 500,000 of us Indians....what is important is that we have a superior way of life. We Indians have a more human philosophy of life. We Indians will show this country how to act human. Some day this country will revise its Constitution, its laws, in terms of human beings instead of property. If 'Red Power' is to be a power in this country, it is because it is ideological.....what is the ultimate value of a man's life? That is the question." -Vine Deloria [pic of buffalo head]
