OPEN LETTER FROM COLLEEN JONES: NEW DIRECTOR OF SSS I am very pleased that I was asked to contribute to your newsletter and I hope that this is just the beginning of an era of open communications between me and you as individuals, singularly and collectively. I want you to know that you are welcome to come and see me, or call me at any time. Also, please feel comfortable in asking me to attend meetings of the CIASU, to discuss matters of interest and concern to you. Please ask me to confer with you BEFORE there is a crisis situation--that way we can give full and due consideration to any matter and fully research the alternatives before decisions have to be made. Following this method, I believe we can work together very well. I encourage you to utilize other SSS staff members as will and to participate in SSS programs. If you feel that our programs and services don't adequately meet your needs, don't tell your friends, tell us (tell me!) and we'll work on it. In the broader spectrum, I want to encourage you to use the University's services and to join in student activities above and beyond those offered by the CIASU. This involvement will help turn general university programs and activities to your wants and needs and furthermore make the whole University sensitive to you, your heritage, and contributions to America. Coming back to Special Support Services, we are still accepting applications for the Assistant Director for Coordination of Chicano Indian-American Programs. As I stated a few weeks ago when I attended a CIASU meeting, you students will have an opportunity to interview candidates for the position and make a recommendation for appointment. I'll keep you advised of the progress on this matter. In closing, I just want to say thank you for asking me to contribute to your newsletter, and I look forward to working with you in the cojing years. THE PRISON CONNECTION IS REVEALED The Iowa State Penitentiary visitations are on the move again. The Chicano Indian Cultural Center was allocated $650 for the school year, for this purpose. The Chicano Indian Center, at the prison in Fort Madison will be holding its next meeting on November 1, 1975. Also, a visitation will be held every first Saturday of each month afterwards. The purpose of these visitations is to meet and talk with our Indian and Chicano brothers there at the prison. Also to give them a general idea of the happenings outside the prison while they in turn give us a general idea of the happenings inside. I have been appointed as the new Prison Coordinator of the visitations. Anyone wishing to participate in the prison visits or having any questions should contact me. Please don't forget about your brothers there, check it out! Sylvia Ramirez Prison Coordinator [hand drawn man] 2
