Locally, the Cedar Rapids community, together with Coe College students and facilities conducted a public forum. People connected with the trial as well as residents from Pine Ridge related experiences of life on the Pine Ridge - Rosebud reservations. [hand drawn man] On each of the three nights of the forum, people described the concentration of policing forces on the reservations, as well as harassment of AIM members. The forum was open and public. An invitation to the FBI to present their side was extended. No FBI people appeared, however; not at the microphone, anyway. Joseph Trimbach, FBI agent in charge of the Minneapolis division, testified in court that the FBI planted informers in AIM. When FBI Director Kelley testified, he was asked about the memo issued to police forces on June 25, just before the trial had a 10-day recess. The memo described acts of violence the FBI believed AIM was planning to commit over the bicentennial weekend. These "acts" included blowing up the BIA building in South Dakota plus the state's capitol building and assassinating the govenor. Kelley admitted the FBI had no proof these acts of violence would occur. The presiding judge in the first Wounded Knee trial declared it a mistrial because of misconduct on the part of the prosecution. In this trial the prosecution had the opportunity to perform for a jury. The performance proved to be unbelievable for the jury, however. Though Bob and Dino's jury was not composed of their peers, it could not help but accept the defense's contention that the FBI's presence and activities on the reservation contributed to the climate of fear from which the shooting on the Jumping Bull residence stemmed.
