CAREER SERVICES AND PLACEMENT CENTER One of the main reasons for a college education is the hope for social and economic advancement through a well paying job. But what many Chicano students fail to realize is that once a degree is obtained a job is not automatically made available. The Career Services and Placement Center in the Iowa Memorial Union is a means for students to get a jump on the job market as a freshman, sophomore, or junior. This Office also offers Coop Programs, Summer Job Programs, as well as career orientation information. Al Seals, the Minority Career Advisor/Coordinatio, deals primarily with minority students in all of the areas mentioned above. He states that he tries to contact every minority student on campus throughout the year to inform them of the services of the Placement Office. However, not as many minority students take advantage of these services as he would like to see. He says that there is a tremendous demand for the minority graduate in all fields but particularly the business and engineering fields. But the most important thing for the minority student to do is to let those firms seeking minority employees know that they are interested. The Placement Office offers workshops on how to write up a resume, how to prepare for an interview, and names and dates of company visitations to Iowa City for interviews. Seals feels that it is important for the student to gain career experience while in college so that the transition to the work world will be as smooth as possible. He thinks that the Cooperative Education Programs are very important. The Cooperative Education Programs are headed by George Matheson (Business Coop) and Classy Hoyle (Science and Engineering Coop). The Coop Program is a federally funded program in which firms are located that offer to students a job related to their fields of study so that they may gain actual career experience. Students may work one semester in the firm then go to school the next semester. Through this program it takes an extra year to graduate. But according to Ms. Hoyle 60% of those on Coop are extended an offer for further employment by the Cont. 4
