Philip G. Hubbard Page 4 February 2, 1977 It should be understood that we understand that this reorganization is administratively sound, but at what point do we consider the people who will be negatively effected because of their cultural base. An administrative decision such as this, we feel, conflicts with the overall spirit in which Special Support Services was founded. We also understand Ms. Jones' concern pertaining to recent litigation in the area of special admission requirements and financial assistance, but not as it effects student oriented programs. We need only look on our campus to see such identifiers as Vetrens Office, "Women Center", etc., to wonder if perhaps we are not overacting. Perhaps a review of litigation as it effects titles of programs and positions, would be appropriate. Dr. Ruldolpho Acuna spoke to this point previously of over reacting to litigation during his recent visit on campus. We welcome an opportunity to sit down with you to discuss our objections to the proposed plan, if you deem it necessary. We firmly believe there is a cultural difference which must be addressed and recognized before any steps toward reorganization of Special Support Services are made. Sincerely, [actual signature] Teresa Rodriguez Task Force, Chairperson cc: Willard Boyd, President Kate Gunn, Vice-Chairperson (CIASU) Edward Ildefonso, Resident Manager (CIACC) Ray Leal, Assistant Director for Chicano and Native American Programs Arnulfo Ramirez, Chairperson (CIASU) (Editor's Note)- Ray Leal's SSS staff position title was changed Feb. 8 from Assistant Director of Chicano and Indian Affairs to Academic Development Specialist. However this title change pertains only to university usage and the former title may also be used. this poses a complicated situation and it remains to be seen what effect it will have. 11
